Možda vrijeme ne liječi duboke osobne rane, no ako niste retro-freak trajno i nekritično opsjednut "starim dobrim danima“, priznat ćete da pogled unatrag ipak znade bitno promijeniti stare ocjene, procjene i dokinuti stare predrasude. U konkretnom slučaju one o Monkeesima; megapopularnom američkom (a i globalnom) "fabrikatu“ industrije masovne zabave koji je publika obožavala a kritika mahom prezirala.
Pedeset godina nakon pojave Monkeesa percepcija o megapopularnoj četvorci bitno je drukčija nego u vrijeme izvornih hit singlova i albuma. Naime, neosporno je da Monkees nisu nastali kao kvartovska družina klinaca napaljenih zajedničkom idejom o glazbi već na audiciji za glumce TV showa/serije. Jednako opće mjesto je da na ranim snimkama nisu sami pisali skladbe, niti svirali većinu instrumenata koje čujete na snimkama.
Gotovo u pravilu se pri tome zaboravlja da su Monkees s vremenom postali ozbiljne autorske i glazbeničke figure, a još više činjenica da su na projektu ranih singlova i albuma surađivali sjajni autori (Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart, Neil Diamond, Carole King i Gerry Goffin) i vrhinski session glazbenici.
Razlog je to zašto diskografija Monkeesa i pedeset godina kasnije zvuči tako vraški dobro i svježe. Dokaz tome su sjajna prva četiri albuma ("The Monkees“, "More of the Monkees“, "Headquartes“ i "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricor & Jones.Ltd“) odnosno skladbe i hitovi poput "Last Train to Clarksville“, "I'm Believer“, "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone“, "The Girl I Knew Somewhere“, "The Porpoise Song“, "Star Collector“, "Tapioca Tundra“, "Goin' Down“...
Album "Good Times“ projekt je na kojem se preživjeloj trojci Monkeesa (Mickyju Dolenzu, Peteru Torku i Michaelu Nesmithu), pridružio niz glazbenika - velikih fanova Monkeesa - iz bandova poput Weezer, Jam, Fountains Of Wayne, XTC, Oasis, Death Cub For Cutie. Korijeni projekta su tri demo snimke iz ranih šezdesetih koje su dorađene i "picnute“ po standardima današnje produkcije a na jednoj od njih, u skladbi "Love To Love“ koju je napisao Neil Diamond, glavni vokal je pokojnog pjevača Davyja Jonesa.
Sva tri preživjela člana banda uz pomoć uglednih prijatelja nisu na "Good Times“ kao statisti već su i te kako aktivni i kao autori i izvođači. I u vlastitim skladbama i novim autorskim prilozima njihovih mnogo mlađih fanova; u brojevima rađenim mahom na tragu zaštitnog zvuka Monkeesa iz polovine šezdesetih. Jedna od njih je sjajna "You Bring the Summer“ Andyja Patridgea iz XTC-ja. "Good Times“ je stoga više od "ispravljanja povijesne nepravde“, podsjetnik na vrijeme kad su The Monkees, u sam osvit "britanske invazije“, palili i žarili američkim rang-listama. On je i "moćna gomilica“ rasnih pop brojeva primjerenih svakom vremenu.

Možda vrijeme ne liječi duboke osobne rane, no ako niste retro-freak trajno i nekritično opsjednut "starim dobrim danima“, priznat ćete da pogled unatrag ipak znade bitno promijeniti stare ocjene, procjene i dokinuti stare predrasude. U konkretnom slučaju one o Monkeesima; megapopularnom američkom (a i globalnom) "fabrikatu“ industrije masovne zabave koji je publika obožavala a kritika mahom prezirala.
Pedeset godina nakon pojave Monkeesa percepcija o megapopularnoj četvorci bitno je drukčija nego u vrijeme izvornih hit singlova i albuma. Naime, neosporno je da Monkees nisu nastali kao kvartovska družina klinaca napaljenih zajedničkom idejom o glazbi već na audiciji za glumce TV showa/serije. Jednako opće mjesto je da na ranim snimkama nisu sami pisali skladbe, niti svirali većinu instrumenata koje čujete na snimkama.
Gotovo u pravilu se pri tome zaboravlja da su Monkees s vremenom postali ozbiljne autorske i glazbeničke figure, a još više činjenica da su na projektu ranih singlova i albuma surađivali sjajni autori (Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart, Neil Diamond, Carole King i Gerry Goffin) i vrhinski session glazbenici.
Razlog je to zašto diskografija Monkeesa i pedeset godina kasnije zvuči tako vraški dobro i svježe. Dokaz tome su sjajna prva četiri albuma ("The Monkees“, "More of the Monkees“, "Headquartes“ i "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricor & Jones.Ltd“) odnosno skladbe i hitovi poput "Last Train to Clarksville“, "I'm Believer“, "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone“, "The Girl I Knew Somewhere“, "The Porpoise Song“, "Star Collector“, "Tapioca Tundra“, "Goin' Down“...
Album "Good Times“ projekt je na kojem se preživjeloj trojci Monkeesa (Mickyju Dolenzu, Peteru Torku i Michaelu Nesmithu), pridružio niz glazbenika - velikih fanova Monkeesa - iz bandova poput Weezer, Jam, Fountains Of Wayne, XTC, Oasis, Death Cub For Cutie. Korijeni projekta su tri demo snimke iz ranih šezdesetih koje su dorađene i "picnute“ po standardima današnje produkcije a na jednoj od njih, u skladbi "Love To Love“ koju je napisao Neil Diamond, glavni vokal je pokojnog pjevača Davyja Jonesa.
Sva tri preživjela člana banda uz pomoć uglednih prijatelja nisu na "Good Times“ kao statisti već su i te kako aktivni i kao autori i izvođači. I u vlastitim skladbama i novim autorskim prilozima njihovih mnogo mlađih fanova; u brojevima rađenim mahom na tragu zaštitnog zvuka Monkeesa iz polovine šezdesetih. Jedna od njih je sjajna "You Bring the Summer“ Andyja Patridgea iz XTC-ja. "Good Times“ je stoga više od "ispravljanja povijesne nepravde“, podsjetnik na vrijeme kad su The Monkees, u sam osvit "britanske invazije“, palili i žarili američkim rang-listama. On je i "moćna gomilica“ rasnih pop brojeva primjerenih svakom vremenu.
