Akebono, sumo hrvač rođen u Americi koji je postao prvi ne-japanski prvak ili "yokozuna", umro je od zatajenja srca u 54. godini u Tokiju. Pobjednik u čak 11 najvećih sumo prvenstava,  Akebono je bio fizički impozantan s 203 centimetra i 233 kilograma, čime je s lakoćom izgurao svoje protivnike.

Rođen kao Chad George Ha‘aheo Rowan na Havajima, Akebono je bio košarkaš na fakultetu prije negoli ga je regrutirao šef japanske sumo škole, koji je također bio Havajac.

Ušao je u sumo svijet 1988. i popeo se do najvišeg ranga yokozune u siječnju 1993., postavši 64. yokozuna modernog sumoa. Kasnije je postao japanski državljanin, uzevši ime Taro Akebono. Kao stranac, Akebono je krenuo stopama Konishija, također s Havaja, te Musashimarua, porijeklom iz Američke Samoe.

"Tijekom svojih 35 godina u Japanu, Akebono je ojačao kulturne veze između Sjedinjenih Država i svoje usvojene domovine ujedinjujući nas kroz sport", objavio je američki veleposlanik u Japanu Rahm Emanuel Emanuel na X.

Akebono se također redovito pojavljivao kao slavna osoba u japanskim TV emisijama, a nakon povlačenja iz sumo sporta 2001. borio se u raznim mješovitim borilačkim vještinama i profesionalnim hrvačkim događajima. Akebono je iza sebe ostavio suprugu, kćer i dva sina.

Akebono, sumo hrvač rođen u Americi koji je postao prvi ne-japanski prvak ili "yokozuna", umro je od zatajenja srca u 54. godini u Tokiju. Pobjednik u čak 11 najvećih sumo prvenstava,  Akebono je bio fizički impozantan s 203 centimetra i 233 kilograma, čime je s lakoćom izgurao svoje protivnike.

Rođen kao Chad George Ha‘aheo Rowan na Havajima, Akebono je bio košarkaš na fakultetu prije negoli ga je regrutirao šef japanske sumo škole, koji je također bio Havajac.

Ušao je u sumo svijet 1988. i popeo se do najvišeg ranga yokozune u siječnju 1993., postavši 64. yokozuna modernog sumoa. Kasnije je postao japanski državljanin, uzevši ime Taro Akebono. Kao stranac, Akebono je krenuo stopama Konishija, također s Havaja, te Musashimarua, porijeklom iz Američke Samoe.

"Tijekom svojih 35 godina u Japanu, Akebono je ojačao kulturne veze između Sjedinjenih Država i svoje usvojene domovine ujedinjujući nas kroz sport", objavio je američki veleposlanik u Japanu Rahm Emanuel Emanuel na X.

Akebono se također redovito pojavljivao kao slavna osoba u japanskim TV emisijama, a nakon povlačenja iz sumo sporta 2001. borio se u raznim mješovitim borilačkim vještinama i profesionalnim hrvačkim događajima. Akebono je iza sebe ostavio suprugu, kćer i dva sina.

Akebono, sumo hrvač rođen u Americi koji je postao prvi ne-japanski prvak ili "yokozuna", umro je od zatajenja srca u 54. godini u Tokiju. Pobjednik u čak 11 najvećih sumo prvenstava,  Akebono je bio fizički impozantan s 203 centimetra i 233 kilograma, čime je s lakoćom izgurao svoje protivnike.

Rođen kao Chad George Ha‘aheo Rowan na Havajima, Akebono je bio košarkaš na fakultetu prije negoli ga je regrutirao šef japanske sumo škole, koji je također bio Havajac.

Ušao je u sumo svijet 1988. i popeo se do najvišeg ranga yokozune u siječnju 1993., postavši 64. yokozuna modernog sumoa. Kasnije je postao japanski državljanin, uzevši ime Taro Akebono. Kao stranac, Akebono je krenuo stopama Konishija, također s Havaja, te Musashimarua, porijeklom iz Američke Samoe.

"Tijekom svojih 35 godina u Japanu, Akebono je ojačao kulturne veze između Sjedinjenih Država i svoje usvojene domovine ujedinjujući nas kroz sport", objavio je američki veleposlanik u Japanu Rahm Emanuel Emanuel na X.

Akebono se također redovito pojavljivao kao slavna osoba u japanskim TV emisijama, a nakon povlačenja iz sumo sporta 2001. borio se u raznim mješovitim borilačkim vještinama i profesionalnim hrvačkim događajima. Akebono je iza sebe ostavio suprugu, kćer i dva sina.
