Virginie Hériot, zvana "Madame de la Mer", iskoristila je svoj status bogate žene kako bi ostavila trag u svijetu jedrenja. Strastvena prema jedrenju i natjecanju, bila je prva olimpijska prvakinja u muškoj posadi, a radila je po cijelom svijetu kao veleposlanica francuske mornarice.

Punim imenom Virginie Claire Désirée Marie Hériot rođena je 25. srpnja 1890. u francuskom gradiću  Le Vésinet, smještenog  daleko od slanih obala koje će nekoliko godina kasnije postati njezin svakodnevni život.

Otkrila je more 1904. u dobi od 14 godina, prateći brata Augustea i prijatelje na svom prvom krstarenju Salvadorom na koje se otisnula parnom jahtom. Od travnja do lipnja plovila je Mediteranom i upoznala mornaričkog časnika Pierrea Lotija koji ju je pozvao na krstaricu-torpedo "Le Vautour" kojom je zapovijedao.

Ovo prvo iskustvo potaknulo je njezinu želju da postane "pomorac". Naime, tada je imala tek 19 godina, a već je morima preplovila respektabilnih 40.000 milja.

5. siječnja 1913.godine napustila je stan u Parizu kako bi živjela i plovila Finlandijom, impozantnom parnim brodom dugim 85 metara.. Dvije godine kasnije zamijenila ju je s brodom Ailée, čeličnom škunom od 44,94 metara. Zanimljivo, u isto vrijeme dala je izgraditi nekoliko natjecateljskih jedrilica koje je sama dizajnirala (trup, jedro, materijali).

Godine 1928. izvojevala je jednu od svojih najvećih pobjeda. Tada je osvojila je zlatnu medalju na Ljetnim olimpijskim igrama u Amsterdamu predvodeći posadu od pet muškaraca na Aile VI. Također je osvojila talijanski kup protiv Nizozemske, Italije, Engleske, Sjedinjenih Država, Švedske, Norveške i Argentine.

Paralelno sa svojim pobjedama, Virginie Hériot odlučila je pokrenuti izgradnju novog visokog broda, smatrajući da je učinak Ailée I nedovoljan. Tako je nastala njena Ailée II,  57-metarska škuna izgrađena u Engleskoj u brodogradilištu Camper and Nicholson.

Virginie Hériot postala je jedna od velikana jedrenja, u vrijeme kada je ovaj sport, iako jedan od rijetkih miješanih, bio rezerviran za elitu. Odlikovana je Legijom časti, a zatim ju je 1930. za posebne zasluge odlikovao španjolski kralj Alfonso XIII. Dobila je nadimak "Madam of the Sea", dok su joj se Englezi divili i nazivali je "najvećom jedriličarkom na svijetu".

Dobila je i titulu veleposlanice francuske mornarice, pa putuje svijetom kako bi održavala konferencije, popularizirala jedrenje i promovirala francusko znanje i iskustvo u brodogradnji. Napisala je nekoliko knjiga o svijetu mora, uključujući zbirku pjesama "Une âme à la mer" (Duša na moru) koju je odlikovala Francuska akademija.

Umrla je 28. kolovoza 1932. u 42. godini života na svom brodu. Željela je da njezino tijelo bude bačeno u more u Bretanji pa je Virginijino tijelo isplovilo na vječni počinak u Brestu 1948. godine.

Virginie Hériot, zvana "Madame de la Mer", iskoristila je svoj status bogate žene kako bi ostavila trag u svijetu jedrenja. Strastvena prema jedrenju i natjecanju, bila je prva olimpijska prvakinja u muškoj posadi, a radila je po cijelom svijetu kao veleposlanica francuske mornarice.

Punim imenom Virginie Claire Désirée Marie Hériot rođena je 25. srpnja 1890. u francuskom gradiću  Le Vésinet, smještenog  daleko od slanih obala koje će nekoliko godina kasnije postati njezin svakodnevni život.

Otkrila je more 1904. u dobi od 14 godina, prateći brata Augustea i prijatelje na svom prvom krstarenju Salvadorom na koje se otisnula parnom jahtom. Od travnja do lipnja plovila je Mediteranom i upoznala mornaričkog časnika Pierrea Lotija koji ju je pozvao na krstaricu-torpedo "Le Vautour" kojom je zapovijedao.

Ovo prvo iskustvo potaknulo je njezinu želju da postane "pomorac". Naime, tada je imala tek 19 godina, a već je morima preplovila respektabilnih 40.000 milja.

5. siječnja 1913.godine napustila je stan u Parizu kako bi živjela i plovila Finlandijom, impozantnom parnim brodom dugim 85 metara.. Dvije godine kasnije zamijenila ju je s brodom Ailée, čeličnom škunom od 44,94 metara. Zanimljivo, u isto vrijeme dala je izgraditi nekoliko natjecateljskih jedrilica koje je sama dizajnirala (trup, jedro, materijali).

Godine 1928. izvojevala je jednu od svojih najvećih pobjeda. Tada je osvojila je zlatnu medalju na Ljetnim olimpijskim igrama u Amsterdamu predvodeći posadu od pet muškaraca na Aile VI. Također je osvojila talijanski kup protiv Nizozemske, Italije, Engleske, Sjedinjenih Država, Švedske, Norveške i Argentine.

Paralelno sa svojim pobjedama, Virginie Hériot odlučila je pokrenuti izgradnju novog visokog broda, smatrajući da je učinak Ailée I nedovoljan. Tako je nastala njena Ailée II,  57-metarska škuna izgrađena u Engleskoj u brodogradilištu Camper and Nicholson.

Virginie Hériot postala je jedna od velikana jedrenja, u vrijeme kada je ovaj sport, iako jedan od rijetkih miješanih, bio rezerviran za elitu. Odlikovana je Legijom časti, a zatim ju je 1930. za posebne zasluge odlikovao španjolski kralj Alfonso XIII. Dobila je nadimak "Madam of the Sea", dok su joj se Englezi divili i nazivali je "najvećom jedriličarkom na svijetu".

Dobila je i titulu veleposlanice francuske mornarice, pa putuje svijetom kako bi održavala konferencije, popularizirala jedrenje i promovirala francusko znanje i iskustvo u brodogradnji. Napisala je nekoliko knjiga o svijetu mora, uključujući zbirku pjesama "Une âme à la mer" (Duša na moru) koju je odlikovala Francuska akademija.

Umrla je 28. kolovoza 1932. u 42. godini života na svom brodu. Željela je da njezino tijelo bude bačeno u more u Bretanji pa je Virginijino tijelo isplovilo na vječni počinak u Brestu 1948. godine.
