Ljepota plastičnih plovila umnogome počiva na njihovoj besprijekornoj glatkoći i sjaju. Za takva svojstva zaslužan je gelcoat, površinska tvrda kora koja se prva nanosi u kalup. Ona skriva nimalo lijepi stakloplastični laminat, a ujedno ga štiti od vlage, sunca, kemikalija...

Stoga oštećenja na gelcoatu treba što prije sanirati. Ako su veća, to treba odraditi stručna osoba, no manja oštećenja, koja se najčešće dogode tijekom ljetnih đita, kad nešto padne i otkrhne komadić gelcoata ili ga nešto ostruže, mogu se popraviti u vlastitom aranžmanu.

Za takve manje zahvate poznata talijanska tvrtka Osculati proizvela je bijeli gelcoat u spreju, budući je to najčešća boja plastičnih plovila. Popravak time postaje vrlo jednostavan. Ako je riječ o manjoj ogrebotini, treba je samo očistiti i posprejati. Ako je, pak, nastalo manje udubljenje, treba ga pokitati poliesterskim ili epoksidnim kitom da se poravna s okolinom, potom lagano izbrusiti finim brusnim papirom, te posprejati gelcoatom. Iz Osculatija tvrde da će on porozne površine ujednačiti i stvoriti satenski završetak jednak okolnom gelcoatu.
