Jeste li čuli za Dolinu smrti? Riječ je o krajnje neobičnom lokalitetu na našoj planeti, smještenom u Istočnu Kaliforniju. Mjesto je to visokih temperatura, visina, životne sredine... Upravo zbog toga zanimljivo je pročitati neke malo poznate - a senzacionalne - podatke o Dolini neugodnog naziva.

Kao prvo, umjetnička djela iz Doline smrti datiraju još otprije tri tisuće godina prije Nove ere; neki od najstarijih zapisa ikad nalaze se upravo tamo, na stijenama. Vjeruje se da je većina djela nastala zahvaljujući Saratoga kulturi koja je na tom mjestu bila prisutna ipak nešto kasnije, između 500 i 1000 godina n.e.

Nadalje, Dolina smrti drži rekord najviše zabilježene temperature u Sjedinjenim Državama! Mjesto je to s obilježjem subtropske pustinjske klime, s dugim i vrućim ljetima te kratkim zimama. Najviša zabilježena temperatura u povijesti SAD-a izmjerena je u gradiću u Furnace Creeku (tik do Doline) 10. srpnja 1913. godine. Te je davne godine Furnace "gorio" na 56 stupnjeva Celzijusa, i rekord još nije oboren; ali mogao bi biti uskoro, uslijed globalnog zatopljenja.

Unatoč teškim vrućinama, u Dolini smrti obitava, vjerovali ili ne, čak oko tisuću vrsta biljaka! Neke se od tih žilavih, nezahtjevnih vrsta nastane na dnu doline i prilagođavaju se oskudnim količinama padalina rastom neverojatno dugog korijenja. Korijenje se spusti i po 100 metara u dubinu kako bi uhvatilo vlagu iz nižih slojeva tla, ili se pak raširi kako bi pokupilo bilo kakvu "vlagicu". Neke imaju i posebno lišće koje zadržava vlažnost kao spremnik. Priroda je čudesna, a to je vidljivo i tamo gdje ne bismo očekivali!

Najmisteriozniji dio je činjenica da u Dolini smrti postoji više 100 "gradova duhova" i napuštenih rudnika. Nastajali su u 19. stoljeću, za vrijeme kalifornijske zlatne groznice, a formirali su ih tragači koji su prelazili Dolinu na putu do zlatonosnih polja. Tijekom kasnog 19. stoljeća Dolina smrti bila je česta usputna ruta pa su je koristili sve više raznorazni namjernici, a kumovali su brojni - na tisuće njih! - otkriveni rudnici zlata, srebra, bakra i boraksa na zapadu!

No, tadašnja primitivna tehnologija i nedostatak vode su otežali iskopavanje rudnika. Kada je zlatna groznica počela jenjavati, središnji gradovi su se gasili... Ipak, mnogi su, premda odavno napušteni, dobro uščuvani i dandanas.

Kuriozitet koji će mnoge jamačno zainteresirati za destinaciju jest podatak da je Dolina smrti najniža geografska točka u u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama, i locirana je čak 86 metara ispod razine mora. Tu se nalazi nizak nivo loše vode (sliv "Badwater" mu je službeni naziv); ta voda nije za piće za ljude, ali napaja floru i privlači faunu.

Na koncu, jedna prava bizarnost. U Dolini smrti nalazi se dvorac Williana E. Scottija, izgrađen 1922. godine. Investicija je bila s namjenom nastzavka traženja zlata i privlačenja ljudi u Dolinu, a prilikom tog građevinskog pothvata koristila se već i tekuća voda, te čak primitivni sustav napajanja električnom strujom pomoću kotača! Investitori su smatrali da još ima obilje zlata u jednom obližnjem rudniku, no investicija se pokazala promašenom. Ipak, ostao je ulomak za - povijest.

Jeste li čuli za Dolinu smrti? Riječ je o krajnje neobičnom lokalitetu na našoj planeti, smještenom u Istočnu Kaliforniju. Mjesto je to visokih temperatura, visina, životne sredine... Upravo zbog toga zanimljivo je pročitati neke malo poznate - a senzacionalne - podatke o Dolini neugodnog naziva.

Kao prvo, umjetnička djela iz Doline smrti datiraju još otprije tri tisuće godina prije Nove ere; neki od najstarijih zapisa ikad nalaze se upravo tamo, na stijenama. Vjeruje se da je većina djela nastala zahvaljujući Saratoga kulturi koja je na tom mjestu bila prisutna ipak nešto kasnije, između 500 i 1000 godina n.e.

Nadalje, Dolina smrti drži rekord najviše zabilježene temperature u Sjedinjenim Državama! Mjesto je to s obilježjem subtropske pustinjske klime, s dugim i vrućim ljetima te kratkim zimama. Najviša zabilježena temperatura u povijesti SAD-a izmjerena je u gradiću u Furnace Creeku (tik do Doline) 10. srpnja 1913. godine. Te je davne godine Furnace "gorio" na 56 stupnjeva Celzijusa, i rekord još nije oboren; ali mogao bi biti uskoro, uslijed globalnog zatopljenja.

Unatoč teškim vrućinama, u Dolini smrti obitava, vjerovali ili ne, čak oko tisuću vrsta biljaka! Neke se od tih žilavih, nezahtjevnih vrsta nastane na dnu doline i prilagođavaju se oskudnim količinama padalina rastom neverojatno dugog korijenja. Korijenje se spusti i po 100 metara u dubinu kako bi uhvatilo vlagu iz nižih slojeva tla, ili se pak raširi kako bi pokupilo bilo kakvu "vlagicu". Neke imaju i posebno lišće koje zadržava vlažnost kao spremnik. Priroda je čudesna, a to je vidljivo i tamo gdje ne bismo očekivali!

Najmisteriozniji dio je činjenica da u Dolini smrti postoji više 100 "gradova duhova" i napuštenih rudnika. Nastajali su u 19. stoljeću, za vrijeme kalifornijske zlatne groznice, a formirali su ih tragači koji su prelazili Dolinu na putu do zlatonosnih polja. Tijekom kasnog 19. stoljeća Dolina smrti bila je česta usputna ruta pa su je koristili sve više raznorazni namjernici, a kumovali su brojni - na tisuće njih! - otkriveni rudnici zlata, srebra, bakra i boraksa na zapadu!

No, tadašnja primitivna tehnologija i nedostatak vode su otežali iskopavanje rudnika. Kada je zlatna groznica počela jenjavati, središnji gradovi su se gasili... Ipak, mnogi su, premda odavno napušteni, dobro uščuvani i dandanas.

Kuriozitet koji će mnoge jamačno zainteresirati za destinaciju jest podatak da je Dolina smrti najniža geografska točka u u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama, i locirana je čak 86 metara ispod razine mora. Tu se nalazi nizak nivo loše vode (sliv "Badwater" mu je službeni naziv); ta voda nije za piće za ljude, ali napaja floru i privlači faunu.

Na koncu, jedna prava bizarnost. U Dolini smrti nalazi se dvorac Williana E. Scottija, izgrađen 1922. godine. Investicija je bila s namjenom nastzavka traženja zlata i privlačenja ljudi u Dolinu, a prilikom tog građevinskog pothvata koristila se već i tekuća voda, te čak primitivni sustav napajanja električnom strujom pomoću kotača! Investitori su smatrali da još ima obilje zlata u jednom obližnjem rudniku, no investicija se pokazala promašenom. Ipak, ostao je ulomak za - povijest.
