Sin industrijalca i bogatog nasljednika mogao je živjeti privilegiranim životom i doživjeti duboku starost. No, spletom okolnosti nije tako bilo ni približno.

Zadobio je ozljedu ruke zbog čijih je posljedica prerano umro, ali njegova smrt je izazvala revoluciju u medicini i farmaciji.

Sin Alexandera McBurneyja Byersa - kolekcionara umjetnina, financijera i predsjednika istoimene čeličane, kao i Nacionalne banke željeza u Pittsburghu, odrastao je u bogatstvu. Pohađao je prestižne škole St. Paula u Concordu, a nakon završetka studija budućnost mu je bila svijetla nakon preuzimanja dijela obiteljskog posla, piše National Geographic.

U studenom 1927. Eben Byers (puno ime: Ebenezer McBurney Byers) se vraćao kući kako bi prisustvovao godišnjoj nogometnoj utakmici Yale-Harvard kada se vlak kojim se vozio naglo zaustavio. Prema nekim izvorima, tada je pao s kreveta i ozlijedio ruku. Liječnik mu je tom prilikom prepisao Radithor- lijek koji se dobiva otapanjem radija u vodi - jer sredinom dvadesetih godina prošlog stoljeća nitko nije bio svjestan da radioaktivni materijal može uzrokovati genetske mutacije i rak ako je netko izložen velikim količinama radija dovoljno dugo.

Naredne tri godine u medicinskoj dokumentaciji Byersa je evidentirano kako je popio čak 1.400 doza spomenutog lijeka. Što znači da je pio i do tri boce na dan. Ne sluteći ništa, Eben Byers je čak tvrdio da mu je lijek pružao osjećaj "pojačane" energije. Ali neželjeni efekti su bili razorni.

Godine 1931., nakon početnih simptoma koji su uključivali glavobolje i gubitak težine, Eben Byers doživio je šok kada mu se čeljust počela raspadati.

Byers je preminuo 31. ožujka 1932. u 51. godini života. Iako je kao uzrok njegove smrti navedeno ‘trovanje radijem‘, prava posljedica bio je rak izazvan lijekom koji je uzimao tri godine. Izvještaji tvrde da je u njegovom tijelu bilo toliko radija da je čak i njegov dah bio radioaktivan, zbog čega je naređeno da bude pokopan u lijesu obloženom olovom.

Njegov slučaj je pokrenuo pitanje sigurnosti lijekova zahvaljujući čemu sada svaki lijek mora proći rigorozna testiranja i biti odobren kao siguran za ljudsku upotrebu, objavio je National Geographic.

Sin industrijalca i bogatog nasljednika mogao je živjeti privilegiranim životom i doživjeti duboku starost. No, spletom okolnosti nije tako bilo ni približno.

Zadobio je ozljedu ruke zbog čijih je posljedica prerano umro, ali njegova smrt je izazvala revoluciju u medicini i farmaciji.

Sin Alexandera McBurneyja Byersa - kolekcionara umjetnina, financijera i predsjednika istoimene čeličane, kao i Nacionalne banke željeza u Pittsburghu, odrastao je u bogatstvu. Pohađao je prestižne škole St. Paula u Concordu, a nakon završetka studija budućnost mu je bila svijetla nakon preuzimanja dijela obiteljskog posla, piše National Geographic.

U studenom 1927. Eben Byers (puno ime: Ebenezer McBurney Byers) se vraćao kući kako bi prisustvovao godišnjoj nogometnoj utakmici Yale-Harvard kada se vlak kojim se vozio naglo zaustavio. Prema nekim izvorima, tada je pao s kreveta i ozlijedio ruku. Liječnik mu je tom prilikom prepisao Radithor- lijek koji se dobiva otapanjem radija u vodi - jer sredinom dvadesetih godina prošlog stoljeća nitko nije bio svjestan da radioaktivni materijal može uzrokovati genetske mutacije i rak ako je netko izložen velikim količinama radija dovoljno dugo.

Naredne tri godine u medicinskoj dokumentaciji Byersa je evidentirano kako je popio čak 1.400 doza spomenutog lijeka. Što znači da je pio i do tri boce na dan. Ne sluteći ništa, Eben Byers je čak tvrdio da mu je lijek pružao osjećaj "pojačane" energije. Ali neželjeni efekti su bili razorni.

Godine 1931., nakon početnih simptoma koji su uključivali glavobolje i gubitak težine, Eben Byers doživio je šok kada mu se čeljust počela raspadati.

Byers je preminuo 31. ožujka 1932. u 51. godini života. Iako je kao uzrok njegove smrti navedeno ‘trovanje radijem‘, prava posljedica bio je rak izazvan lijekom koji je uzimao tri godine. Izvještaji tvrde da je u njegovom tijelu bilo toliko radija da je čak i njegov dah bio radioaktivan, zbog čega je naređeno da bude pokopan u lijesu obloženom olovom.

Njegov slučaj je pokrenuo pitanje sigurnosti lijekova zahvaljujući čemu sada svaki lijek mora proći rigorozna testiranja i biti odobren kao siguran za ljudsku upotrebu, objavio je National Geographic.

Sin industrijalca i bogatog nasljednika mogao je živjeti privilegiranim životom i doživjeti duboku starost. No, spletom okolnosti nije tako bilo ni približno.

Zadobio je ozljedu ruke zbog čijih je posljedica prerano umro, ali njegova smrt je izazvala revoluciju u medicini i farmaciji.

Sin Alexandera McBurneyja Byersa - kolekcionara umjetnina, financijera i predsjednika istoimene čeličane, kao i Nacionalne banke željeza u Pittsburghu, odrastao je u bogatstvu. Pohađao je prestižne škole St. Paula u Concordu, a nakon završetka studija budućnost mu je bila svijetla nakon preuzimanja dijela obiteljskog posla, piše National Geographic.
