Zapovjednici bojne Azov, proslavljeni herojskom obranom Mariupolja, napokon su se u Turskoj susreli sa svojim obiteljima.

Vođe Azova, među kojima su zapovjednici Denis Prokopenko i njegov zamjenik Svjatoslav Palamar, razmijenjeni su u sklopu nedavne razmjene zarobljenika u kojoj je posredovala Turska, donosi Slobodna Dalmacija.

Rusija je tada oslobodila 215 zarobljenika, među kojima su, osim vođa Azova, bili i zarobljeni stranci koji su se borili u postrojbama regularne ukrajinske vojske.

Tom prilikom je oslobođen i Hrvat Vjekoslav Prebeg, zarobljen nakon pada Mariupolja.

Ukrajina je oslobodila 55 zarobljenika, među kojima je Viktor Medvedčuk, bliski prijatelj Vladimira Putina.

Prema dogovoru, zapovjednicima Azova ipak nije dopušten povratak u Ukrajinu, već će do okončanja neprijateljstava ostati u Turskoj, pod zaštitom predsjednika Recepa Tayyipa Erdogana.

Moći će slobodno komunicirati i primati posjete, pa su tako po prvi put nakon izbijanja rata imali priliku vidjeti svoje najmilije.

Vojnici bataljona Azov gotovo tri mjeseca odbijali su ruske napade na čeličanu Azovstal u Mariupolju, ispod koje se nalazi podzemni labirint skloništa iz sovjetske era i servisni tuneli.

Azovstal zauzima 11 kvadratnih kilometara i bio je jedino ukrajinsko uporište u luci Azovskog mora gdje su u ruskim napadima ubijeni deseci tisuća civila.

Ruski predsjednik Vladimir Putin rekao je krajem travnja da će njegove snage prestati sa pokušajima da zauzmu Azovstal, te da će ga umjesto toga blokirati tako da ni ‘muha ne može izaći‘. Ali napadi su se nastavljali teškom artiljerijom, dronovima, tenkovima i pješadijom, iako su stotine mariupoljskih civila našle utočište u Azovstalu.

Bataljon Azov komunicirao je sa vanjskim svijetom putem vlastitog Telegram kanala, gdje su objavljivali videa napada i fotografije teško ranjenih boraca te pozivali vladu da pronađe način da ih se evakuira. 

Prije ruske invazije malo tko, tko nije u poslu s čelikom, je čuo za Azovstal - čeličanu koja je postala posljednje utočište civila u okruženom Mariupolju.

Juri Riženkov, CEO Metinvest Holdinga, tvrtke vlasnice čeličane, još je u svibnju ove godine kazao kako je devastiran događanjima u čeličani.

‘Zapravo ne mislim da Vladimir Putin uopće želi čeličanu. Mislim da se radi o simbolici i da žele pokoriti Mariupolj. Nisu očekivali da će se Mariupolj toliko dugo braniti - objasnio je tada.
