Američki tinejdžer iz Las Vegasa preminuo je od akutne infekcije izazvane "amebom koja jede mozak", potvrdili su zdravstveni dužnosnici savezne države Nevada putem priopćenja za medije - piše Jutarnji list.
Tinejdžer, čiji identitet nije poznat, vjerojatno se zarazio kada je s roditeljima posljednjeg vikenda rujna boravio u poznatom rekreacijskom centru Lake Mead u saveznoj državi Nevada. Dječak se vjerojatno zarazio dok je plivao u zaraženoj vodi pa je ameba kroz nosnu sluznicu prodrla do njegovog mozga. Prve simptome, kao što su glavobolja, groznica, mučnina i povraćanje, dječak je razvio tjedan dana nakon interakcije s fatalnom amebom. Infekcija se brzo proširila do mozga te je dječak u kratkom vremenu preminuo od posljedica primarnog amebnog meningoencefalitisa (PAM).
Njegova smrt zgrozila je Amerikance tim više što je ovo drugi smrtni slučaj u zadnja dva mjeseca: podsjetimo prije dva mjeseca "ameba koja jede mozak" odnijela je život jednog dječaka iz Nebraske koji se s roditeljima kupao na rijeci Elkhorn. Ipak, stručnjaci upozoravaju da nema mjesta panici nego samo treba biti oprezan.

- To je vrlo, vrlo rijetka bolest. Ne treba zbog toga dizati alarm. Ljudi moraju biti pametni kada su na mjestima gdje ova rijetka ameba zapravo živi. Organizam se nalazi u slatkim vodama čije su temperature od 11 do 46 Celzijevih stupnjeva – izjavio je za Guardian dr. Brian Labus, epidemiolog sa Sveučilišta Nevada.
Prvi slučaj zaraze "amebom koja jede mozak" zabilježen je u Australiji početkom 1960-ih: od tada je diljem svijeta registrirano nekoliko stotina zaraženih od kojih je preživjelo svega desetak ljudi. Američki CDC (Centri za kontrolu i prevenciju bolesti) od 1962. godine zabilježio 154 slučaja zaraze u SAD- u, od kojih su 152 završila fatalno. Stručnjaci upozoravaju da se čovjek može zaraziti amebom udisanjem kontaminirane vode prilikom plivanja ili ispiranjem nosnih puteva neprokuhanom ili nefiltriranom vodovodnom vodom. Ljudi se ne mogu zaraziti ako progutaju amebu niti se zaraza širi međuljudskim kontaktom.
Najčešće žrtve su djeca i mladi koji se u vrućim ljetnim mjesecima kupaju u slatkim vodama. Kako je dosad preživjelo tek nekoliko bolesnika, nije jasno koje je liječenje najbolje. Eksperimentalni dokazi ukazuju kako bi koristan mogao biti azitromicin.

Američki tinejdžer iz Las Vegasa preminuo je od akutne infekcije izazvane "amebom koja jede mozak", potvrdili su zdravstveni dužnosnici savezne države Nevada putem priopćenja za medije - piše Jutarnji list.
Tinejdžer, čiji identitet nije poznat, vjerojatno se zarazio kada je s roditeljima posljednjeg vikenda rujna boravio u poznatom rekreacijskom centru Lake Mead u saveznoj državi Nevada. Dječak se vjerojatno zarazio dok je plivao u zaraženoj vodi pa je ameba kroz nosnu sluznicu prodrla do njegovog mozga. Prve simptome, kao što su glavobolja, groznica, mučnina i povraćanje, dječak je razvio tjedan dana nakon interakcije s fatalnom amebom. Infekcija se brzo proširila do mozga te je dječak u kratkom vremenu preminuo od posljedica primarnog amebnog meningoencefalitisa (PAM).
Njegova smrt zgrozila je Amerikance tim više što je ovo drugi smrtni slučaj u zadnja dva mjeseca: podsjetimo prije dva mjeseca "ameba koja jede mozak" odnijela je život jednog dječaka iz Nebraske koji se s roditeljima kupao na rijeci Elkhorn. Ipak, stručnjaci upozoravaju da nema mjesta panici nego samo treba biti oprezan.

- To je vrlo, vrlo rijetka bolest. Ne treba zbog toga dizati alarm. Ljudi moraju biti pametni kada su na mjestima gdje ova rijetka ameba zapravo živi. Organizam se nalazi u slatkim vodama čije su temperature od 11 do 46 Celzijevih stupnjeva – izjavio je za Guardian dr. Brian Labus, epidemiolog sa Sveučilišta Nevada.
Prvi slučaj zaraze "amebom koja jede mozak" zabilježen je u Australiji početkom 1960-ih: od tada je diljem svijeta registrirano nekoliko stotina zaraženih od kojih je preživjelo svega desetak ljudi. Američki CDC (Centri za kontrolu i prevenciju bolesti) od 1962. godine zabilježio 154 slučaja zaraze u SAD- u, od kojih su 152 završila fatalno. Stručnjaci upozoravaju da se čovjek može zaraziti amebom udisanjem kontaminirane vode prilikom plivanja ili ispiranjem nosnih puteva neprokuhanom ili nefiltriranom vodovodnom vodom. Ljudi se ne mogu zaraziti ako progutaju amebu niti se zaraza širi međuljudskim kontaktom.
Najčešće žrtve su djeca i mladi koji se u vrućim ljetnim mjesecima kupaju u slatkim vodama. Kako je dosad preživjelo tek nekoliko bolesnika, nije jasno koje je liječenje najbolje. Eksperimentalni dokazi ukazuju kako bi koristan mogao biti azitromicin.
