U 84. godini preminuo je Brian Mulroney, bivši kanadski premijer koji je sklopio sporazum o slobodnoj trgovini sa SAD-om, ali čije je nasljeđe bilo narušeno otkrićima o nedoličnom poslovanju s trgovcem oružjem.

Mulroney je imao operaciju srca u kolovozu, a ranije prošle godine liječen je od raka prostate.

Korporacijski odvjetnik koji je postao biznismen, Mulroney je vodio progresivne konzervativce desnog centra do povijesne pobjede 1984. nad liberalima Pierrea Trudeaua. Kao vješt političar s darom za javni govor, Mulroney je u Kanadi nastojao oponašati konzervativne sklonosti iz doba Ronalda Reagana i Margaret Thatcher preuređenjem poreznog sustava i rasprodajom državne imovine.

Njegovo devetogodišnje upravljanje obilježili su pregovori o Sporazumu o slobodnoj trgovini između Kanade i Sjedinjenih Država 1988., koji je pomogao povećati kanadski izvoz, te uvođenjem poreza na robu i usluge 1991. Porez je bio izrazito nepopularan politički, ali je pomogao popraviti vladine financije.

Pod Mulroneyem su rasprodane neke državne korporacije, uključujući Air Canadu.

Mulroney je također vodio dva neuspješna pokušaja promjene kanadskog ustava kako bi se pokrajini Quebec s pretežno francuskim govornim područjem dodijelio status zasebnog društva. Napori, osmišljeni kako bi se osujetio pokret za neovisnost Quebeca, potaknuli su duboke raskole između francuske i engleske Kanade koji su politički odjekivali desetljećima. Mulroney se aktivno zanimao za vanjske poslove, gurajući sporazum sa Sjedinjenim Državama o suzbijanju kiselih kiša, predvodeći napore za rješavanje gladi u Etiopiji 1984. i govoreći protiv apartheida u Južnoj Africi.

Mulroney je uspostavio blisku vezu s Reaganom, tadašnjim američkim predsjednikom, a njih su dvojica obilježili summit 1985. javnom izvedbom pjesme "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling".

Blizak prijatelj i Reagana i bivšeg predsjednika SAD-a Georgea H. W. Busha, održao je oproštajne govore na pogrebima obojice.

U 84. godini preminuo je Brian Mulroney, bivši kanadski premijer koji je sklopio sporazum o slobodnoj trgovini sa SAD-om, ali čije je nasljeđe bilo narušeno otkrićima o nedoličnom poslovanju s trgovcem oružjem.

Mulroney je imao operaciju srca u kolovozu, a ranije prošle godine liječen je od raka prostate.
