"Starost nije bolest. Stara osoba nije Marsovac. Stara osoba smo mi uskoro ili puno kasnije, neizbježno, čak ako na to ne mislimo", primijetio je 78-godišnji Papa pred 12.000 okupljenih na Trgu sv. Petra na tjednoj općoj audijenciji.

"Zahvaljujući napretku medicine, život se produžava, ali se društvo ne otvara životu! Dok smo mladi zanemarujemo starost, kao da se radi o bolesti od koje se treba distancirati, ali kad starimo - posebno ako smo siromašni, bolesni ili sami - uviđamo da je društvo programirano na učinkovitost koja, posljedično, ignorira stare osobe".

Citirao je "jasne i proročke riječi" svojeg prethodnika Benedikta XVI. koji je kazao da se "kvaliteta civilizacije ocjenjuje djelomično po načinu na koji se odnosi prema starim osobama".

Dok smo mladi zanemarujemo starost, kao da se radi o bolesti od koje se treba distancirati, ali kad starimo - posebno ako smo siromašni, bolesni ili sami - uviđamo da je društvo programirano na učinkovitost koja, posljedično, ignorira stare osobe".

Citirao je "jasne i proročke riječi" svojeg prethodnika Benedikta XVI. koji je kazao da se "kvaliteta civilizacije ocjenjuje djelomično po načinu na koji se odnosi prema starim osobama".

Papa Franjo izrazio je nezadovoljstvo u srijedu zbog tendencije mladih generacija da starost sve više smatraju "bolešću od koje se treba distancirati" a stare osobe "Marsovcima".
