Vojna veteranka Jennifer Barlow (33) iz Atlante u Georgiji izgubila je nogu nakon što se na odmoru na Bahamima zarazila bakterijom koja izjeda meso.
S odmora se vratila u siječnju te je odmah osjetila da nešto nije u redu. Naime, Barlow je redovito išla u teretanu i bila je ‘zdrava kao vol‘, ali odjednom je osjetila slabost i zalegla u krevet na četiri dana. Desno joj je koljeno nateklo i bilo je ‘barem tri puta veće‘ od lijevog koljena, crveno i vruće na dodir.

Liječnici u lokalnoj hitnoj službi pogrešno su zaključili da je koljeno samo uganuto te su je poslali kući sa štakama i lijekovima protiv bolova. Međutim, koljeno je nastavilo rasti i uskoro je njezina noga izgledala ‘kao u diva‘.
Na posljetku joj je dijagnosticirana rijetka bakterijska infekcija koja se zove nekrotizirajući fasciitis.
‘Bio sam jako zabrinut da neće preživjeti. Njezin život bio je u velikoj opasnosti‘, kazao je Dr. Jonathan Pollock, liječniku medicinskom centru Joseph Cleland Atlanta.

Nekrotizirajući fasciitis (bakterija koja jede meso) je teška infekcija koja se brzo širi i ubija jednog od pet oboljelih, prema Centru za kontrolu i prevenciju bolesti (CDC).
Ulazi kroz posjekotinu i ranu
Najčešće ulazi u tijelo kroz posjekotinu ili drugu ranu na koži, uključujući opekline, ubode insekata i kirurške rane.
Stanje može biti teško dijagnosticirati jer simptomi mogu oponašati druge bolesti. Simptomi uključuju crveno ili toplo područje kože koje se brzo širi, jaku bol i groznicu. Kako se nekrotizirajući fasciitis širi, može uzrokovati čireve ili mjehuriće na koži, promjene boje kože, gnoj, vrtoglavicu, umor, proljev i mučninu.
CDC procjenjuje da se svake godine u SAD-u dogodi ovakvih 700 do 1150 slučajeva.

Odmah započeti liječenje ključno je za sprječavanje širenja infekcije. Antibiotici mogu biti učinkoviti, iako ne dopiru uvijek do svih zaraženih područja, a pacijenti obično trebaju više operacija kako bi uklonili što više mrtvog mesa.
Barlow je na 10 dana stavljena u medicinski induciranu komu, a kad se probudila, iza nje je već bilo 12 odrađenih operacija.
‘Bila sam zbunjena i uplašena‘, rekla je.

Ukupno je prošla više od 30 operacija, uključujući i amputaciju noge, a pala je i u septički šok.
Najčešći uzrok nekrotizirajućeg fasciitisa je streptokok skupine A, oblik bakterije koja inače uzrokuje upalu grla.
Barlow vjeruje da je možda bila izložena bakteriji dok je bila na odmoru na Bahamima, a liječnici još uvijek nisu sigurni što je uzrok.
Barlow se nakon četiri mjeseca provedena u bolnici vratila se kući i sada skuplja novac za protetičku nogu.

Vojna veteranka Jennifer Barlow (33) iz Atlante u Georgiji izgubila je nogu nakon što se na odmoru na Bahamima zarazila bakterijom koja izjeda meso.
S odmora se vratila u siječnju te je odmah osjetila da nešto nije u redu. Naime, Barlow je redovito išla u teretanu i bila je ‘zdrava kao vol‘, ali odjednom je osjetila slabost i zalegla u krevet na četiri dana. Desno joj je koljeno nateklo i bilo je ‘barem tri puta veće‘ od lijevog koljena, crveno i vruće na dodir.
‘Bol je bila neopisiva‘, ispričala je.

Liječnici u lokalnoj hitnoj službi pogrešno su zaključili da je koljeno samo uganuto te su je poslali kući sa štakama i lijekovima protiv bolova. Međutim, koljeno je nastavilo rasti i uskoro je njezina noga izgledala ‘kao u diva‘.
Na posljetku joj je dijagnosticirana rijetka bakterijska infekcija koja se zove nekrotizirajući fasciitis.
‘Bio sam jako zabrinut da neće preživjeti. Njezin život bio je u velikoj opasnosti‘, kazao je Dr. Jonathan Pollock, liječniku medicinskom centru Joseph Cleland Atlanta.

Nekrotizirajući fasciitis (bakterija koja jede meso) je teška infekcija koja se brzo širi i ubija jednog od pet oboljelih, prema Centru za kontrolu i prevenciju bolesti (CDC).
Ulazi kroz posjekotinu i ranu
Najčešće ulazi u tijelo kroz posjekotinu ili drugu ranu na koži, uključujući opekline, ubode insekata i kirurške rane.
Stanje može biti teško dijagnosticirati jer simptomi mogu oponašati druge bolesti. Simptomi uključuju crveno ili toplo područje kože koje se brzo širi, jaku bol i groznicu. Kako se nekrotizirajući fasciitis širi, može uzrokovati čireve ili mjehuriće na koži, promjene boje kože, gnoj, vrtoglavicu, umor, proljev i mučninu.
CDC procjenjuje da se svake godine u SAD-u dogodi ovakvih 700 do 1150 slučajeva.

Odmah započeti liječenje ključno je za sprječavanje širenja infekcije. Antibiotici mogu biti učinkoviti, iako ne dopiru uvijek do svih zaraženih područja, a pacijenti obično trebaju više operacija kako bi uklonili što više mrtvog mesa.
Barlow je na 10 dana stavljena u medicinski induciranu komu, a kad se probudila, iza nje je već bilo 12 odrađenih operacija.
‘Bila sam zbunjena i uplašena‘, rekla je.

Ukupno je prošla više od 30 operacija, uključujući i amputaciju noge, a pala je i u septički šok.
Najčešći uzrok nekrotizirajućeg fasciitisa je streptokok skupine A, oblik bakterije koja inače uzrokuje upalu grla.
Barlow vjeruje da je možda bila izložena bakteriji dok je bila na odmoru na Bahamima, a liječnici još uvijek nisu sigurni što je uzrok.
Barlow se nakon četiri mjeseca provedena u bolnici vratila se kući i sada skuplja novac za protetičku nogu.
