Fascinantan basist - a pokazalo se i vraški duhovit konferansijer - Reid Anderson, čudesna bubnjarska radilica David King te vrsni klavirist Ethan Iverson, savim sigurno nisu tipičan jazz trio.

Recimo, klavirist Iverson za razliku od većine jazz pijanista nije ni razabarušen svirač a još manje samozadovoljni klavirski „brzoprstić" sklon razmetanju. A opet, njegovo sviranje - na trenutke „monotono" s repetirajućim minimalističkim frazama koje su, recimo, dominirale u temi „Wolf Out" - svojevrsna je kralježnica oko koje se uvija i mota gipka ritam sekcija.

Bubanj u 'kontri'

Za nenavikle uši jazz purista svirka trija može se činiti na trenutke i blasfemična. Uvodni koncertni broj „Pound For Pound" koji je i uobičajeni standard na turneji kojom promoviraju ovogodišnji album „Inevitable Western", ako je suditi po Iversonu više je nadahnuća povukao iz klasične glazbe (konačno, The Bad Plus strastveno vole Stravinskog kojem su lani ispisali hommage na albumu „The Rite Of Spring") nego li iz jazza.

Lirska klavirska balada u kojoj je cijelo vrijeme klaviru „u kontri" prigušen no moćan Kingov bubanj, dominira temom koja se pri kraju zahuktava sve većim angažmanom kontrabasa no bez mrcvarećih improvizacija. I treći izvedeni broj, tema „Self Serve" (skinuta s novog albuma), pokazala je da je u svakom trenutku prisutna jasna melodijska linija koja se poput crvene niti provlači kroz „klasičnu" jazz temu najbližu razigranom post-bopu.

„Mr.Now", još jedan novi broj, nešto je posve drugačije. U uvodu se ćuti dah funka da bi - uz sjajan bubnjarski solo u diskretnoj no razigranoj pratnji kontrabasa - trojka savršeno razmjenjivala instrumentalne dijaloge u još jednoj bezgrješnoj post-bop temi.

Čudesna 'Nirvana'

U „I Hear You" melodija i „lirski" klavir opet dominiraju dok je „Re-Elect That" odsviran kao na amfetaminima. Tema „jurilica" - u kojoj je King odradio moćni bubnjarski solo svirajući, na sveopće iznenađenje, metlicama a ne palicama te koristeći kao specijalni efekt dječju igračku na navijanje - mogla bi čak proći i kao nešto iz dana post-punka križano s post-bopom. "For My Eyes Only" - kao i prethodni broj tema sa albuma „Made Possible" - počela je pak kao pop-rock balada dok je u „Seven Minute Mind" glavni pečat dao King; najodgovorniji za kritičarsku opservaciju broja kao „frenetičnog labirinta".

Zaključni broj, tema s novog albuma „Gold Prism Incorporated" ponovo djeluje kao zagrljaj jazza i post rocka. Prethodilo joj je duhovito predstavljanje članova benda a onda i iznenađujuće Andersonovo pjevano pozdravljanje publike uz poziv da kupi njihove CD-e izložene u predvorju ZKM. Iznuđeni bis je donio čudesnu verziju Nirvanine „Smells Like Teen Spirit" koja je, očekivano, oduševila (barem) mlađi dio publike. No čak i bez tog šlaga na torti nastup The Bad Plus kojim je zaključen ovogodišnji, više no uspješni, VIP Zagreb jazz festival, zaslužio je i šešir dolje i palac gore.

jazza iliti sezonci koji s vremena na vrijeme posjete jazz koncert kad im je baš pred nosom i nisu znali tko su i što su The Bad Plus trio, njihov sjajan koncert u ZKM-u sigurno je trojac upisao na popis budućih favorita. Fascinantan basist - a pokazalo se i vraški duhovit konferansijer - Reid Anderson, čudesna bubnjarska radilica David King te vrsni klavirist Ethan Iverson, savim sigurno nisu tipičan jazz trio.

Recimo, klavirist Iverson za razliku od većine jazz pijanista nije ni razabarušen svirač a još manje samozadovoljni klavirski „brzoprstić" sklon razmetanju. A opet, njegovo sviranje - na trenutke „monotono" s repetirajućim minimalističkim frazama koje su, recimo, dominirale u temi „Wolf Out" - svojevrsna je kralježnica oko koje se uvija i mota gipka ritam sekcija.

Bubanj u 'kontri'

Za nenavikle uši jazz purista svirka trija može se činiti na trenutke i blasfemična. Uvodni koncertni broj „Pound For Pound" koji je i uobičajeni standard na turneji kojom promoviraju ovogodišnji album „Inevitable Western", ako je suditi po Iversonu više je nadahnuća povukao iz klasične glazbe (konačno, The Bad Plus strastveno vole Stravinskog kojem su lani ispisali hommage na albumu „The Rite Of Spring") nego li iz jazza.

Lirska klavirska balada u kojoj je cijelo vrijeme klaviru „u kontri" prigušen no moćan Kingov bubanj, dominira temom koja se pri kraju zahuktava sve većim angažmanom kontrabasa no bez mrcvarećih improvizacija. I treći izvedeni broj, tema „Self Serve" (skinuta s novog albuma), pokazala je da je u svakom trenutku prisutna jasna melodijska linija koja se poput crvene niti provlači kroz „klasičnu" jazz temu najbližu razigranom post-bopu.

„Mr.Now", još jedan novi broj, nešto je posve drugačije. U uvodu se ćuti dah funka da bi - uz sjajan bubnjarski solo u diskretnoj no razigranoj pratnji kontrabasa - trojka savršeno razmjenjivala instrumentalne dijaloge u još jednoj bezgrješnoj post-bop temi.

Čudesna 'Nirvana'

U „I Hear You" melodija i „lirski" klavir opet dominiraju dok je „Re-Elect That" odsviran kao na amfetaminima. Tema „jurilica" - u kojoj je King odradio moćni bubnjarski solo svirajući, na sveopće iznenađenje, metlicama a ne palicama te koristeći kao specijalni efekt dječju igračku na navijanje - mogla bi čak proći i kao nešto iz dana post-punka križano s post-bopom. "For My Eyes Only" - kao i prethodni broj tema sa albuma „Made Possible" - počela je pak kao pop-rock balada dok je u „Seven Minute Mind" glavni pečat dao King; najodgovorniji za kritičarsku opservaciju broja kao „frenetičnog labirinta".

Zaključni broj, tema s novog albuma „Gold Prism Incorporated" ponovo djeluje kao zagrljaj jazza i post rocka. Prethodilo joj je duhovito predstavljanje članova benda a onda i iznenađujuće Andersonovo pjevano pozdravljanje publike uz poziv da kupi njihove CD-e izložene u predvorju ZKM. Iznuđeni bis je donio čudesnu verziju Nirvanine „Smells Like Teen Spirit" koja je, očekivano, oduševila (barem) mlađi dio publike. No čak i bez tog šlaga na torti nastup The Bad Plus kojim je zaključen ovogodišnji, više no uspješni, VIP Zagreb jazz festival, zaslužio je i šešir dolje i palac gore.
