Dojam prkosi satovima, kalendarima i svemu onome što smo učili u školi, ali je neizbježan: šezdesete se naprosto čine kao najdulje desetljeće u povijesti. S ove distance, teško je vjerovati kako se toliko obilje velikih, važnih, prevratničkih događaja – i to u svim poljima ljudskog djelovanja – uspjelo stisnuti u samo deset godina.

Dojmu sigurno pridonosi i činjenica što je dobar dio čovječanstva u jednoj jedincatoj dekadi uspio prijeći dug put od vjere u zavodljivu utopiju do gorkog razočaranja. U tome razdoblju stigli smo imati i ljeto ljubavi i proljeće revolucije, da bi nas onda sustigla jesen rezignacije.

Erudicija i strast

Veseli pariški svibanj zaključen je pobjedom degolista, dakle, desničara, a češke nade u socijalizam s ljudskim licem razmrvile su se u kolovozu 1968. pod gusjenicama sovjetskih tenkova. O bogatstvu zbivanja u tome desetljeću, ali i širini njihova raspona, najzornije svjedoči sektor popularne glazbe. Dekadu koju su započeli Shadowsi umivenim, zvonkim, kristalno čistim i nimalo subverzivnim instrumentalima, zaključit će cijela kavalkada grupa ozračenih psihodelijom, obojenih distorzijom i zaokupljenih propitivanjem svih autoriteta. Uostalom, sjetimo se samo Beatlesa, grupe koja je službeno trajala otprilike koliko i same šezdesete. Na početku karijere bili su boy band sa zvečećim gitarama i pjesmama o mladalačkim ljubavima, da bi se na njezinom kraju poigravali sa Stockhausenom i atonalnom glazbom.

Kad ispod svega podvučemo crtu, nećemo pogriješiti kažemo li kako je povijest popularne glazbe šezdesetih ustvari povijest popularne glazbe kao takve. Nju, pak, može ispisati samo čeljade koje iza sebe ima dug publicistički staž i reputaciju glazbenog enciklopedista. U slučaju Zlatka Galla ta etiketa nije pitanje odokativne procjene i pjesničke slobode, nego doslovna činjenica jer se u njegovom zamašnom autorskom portfelju, uz zbirke rahle esejistike, nalaze i svesci stroge, precizne i sveobuhvatne leksikonske, odnosno enciklopedijske literature.

Ovome emeritusu rock kritike oduvijek sam zavidio barem koliko sam ga i sažalijevao. Divno je posvetiti cijeli život glazbi koju voliš, makar kao njezin publicistički suputnik, ako već ne kao njezin stvaralac. Međutim, taj karijerni izbor sa sobom nosi i stanovite probleme. Želiš li sačuvati profesionalnu reputaciju, produkciju moraš pratiti u cijelosti, a ne razmaženo birati o kojim ćeš izvođačima i žanrovima pisati.

Dekada koja traje

To znači da puno svoga vremena i energije moraš potrošiti na albume koji ne samo da te ne privlače, nego te možda iritiraju, ali ih, unatoč tome, ne smiješ zaobilaziti jer su objektivno važni i vrijedni. Neumoljiv prema sebi, ali i sadržaju svoga pisanja, Gall nikada nije išao linijom manjeg otpora, nego je dosljedno pratio ama baš sve što se pod egidom popularne glazbe snimalo i izvodilo (što i nadalje čini, premda je službeno u mirovini). Potom je to šarenilo (žanrova, ambicija, dosega...) dugo prosijavao kroz filtere nijansiranih kriterija, da bi onda uspostavio hijerarhiju te razlučio kome pripada čast inovatora, a kome status epigona.

Njegov zamašni (580 stranica) libar pod naslovom “Šezdesete” i podnaslovom “Kada je glazba mijenjala svijet”, akribični bedeker kroz jednu glazbenu epohu ispisan u formi abecedarija (eseji pokrivaju raspon od Allman Brothers Banda do Zombiesa, ne zanemarujući ni hrvatske začinjavce) dojmljivo je svjedočanstvo i erudicije, i metodološke strogosti, ali, prije svega, strasti. U neku ruku, knjiga se može čitati i kao svojevrsna posveta vlastitim formativnim godinama, jer je autor (rođen 1954.) na izmaku dekade već bio tinejdžer s jasno profiliranim afinitetima, ukusom, pa čak i ambicijom da se posveti pisanju o glazbi, poput svojih tadašnjih uzora iz “New Musical Express” i “Melody Makera”.

Da “Šezdesete” valja preporučiti mladima čija su znanja o toj dekadi relativno oskudna, suvišno je i napominjati. No treba li još jedan libar o slavnoj epohi onima koji su se na nju odavno navukli i u međuvremenu pročitali kubik-dva slične literature? O da, treba, itekako treba, jer će i najveći zaluđenik u šezdesete u Gallovoj inventuri otkriti preobilje podataka koji mu ranije nisu bili poznati. Činjenica što je knjiga prebogato ilustrirana fotografijama – među kojima ih ima lijep broj koje potpisnik ovih redaka nikada prije nije vidio – samo je dodatni razlog da knjigu što prije uzmete u ruke. Konačno, šezdesete su prošle samo de jure, ali ne i de facto, jer se sva glazba iz toga doba i dandanas reciklira i tako, barem posredno, oblikuje soundtrack našega vremena. •

Dojam prkosi satovima, kalendarima i svemu onome što smo učili u školi, ali je neizbježan: šezdesete se naprosto čine kao najdulje desetljeće u povijesti. S ove distance, teško je vjerovati kako se toliko obilje velikih, važnih, prevratničkih događaja – i to u svim poljima ljudskog djelovanja – uspjelo stisnuti u samo deset godina.

Dojmu sigurno pridonosi i činjenica što je dobar dio čovječanstva u jednoj jedincatoj dekadi uspio prijeći dug put od vjere u zavodljivu utopiju do gorkog razočaranja. U tome razdoblju stigli smo imati i ljeto ljubavi i proljeće revolucije, da bi nas onda sustigla jesen rezignacije.

Erudicija i strast

Veseli pariški svibanj zaključen je pobjedom degolista, dakle, desničara, a češke nade u socijalizam s ljudskim licem razmrvile su se u kolovozu 1968. pod gusjenicama sovjetskih tenkova. O bogatstvu zbivanja u tome desetljeću, ali i širini njihova raspona, najzornije svjedoči sektor popularne glazbe. Dekadu koju su započeli Shadowsi umivenim, zvonkim, kristalno čistim i nimalo subverzivnim instrumentalima, zaključit će cijela kavalkada grupa ozračenih psihodelijom, obojenih distorzijom i zaokupljenih propitivanjem svih autoriteta. Uostalom, sjetimo se samo Beatlesa, grupe koja je službeno trajala otprilike koliko i same šezdesete. Na početku karijere bili su boy band sa zvečećim gitarama i pjesmama o mladalačkim ljubavima, da bi se na njezinom kraju poigravali sa Stockhausenom i atonalnom glazbom.

Kad ispod svega podvučemo crtu, nećemo pogriješiti kažemo li kako je povijest popularne glazbe šezdesetih ustvari povijest popularne glazbe kao takve. Nju, pak, može ispisati samo čeljade koje iza sebe ima dug publicistički staž i reputaciju glazbenog enciklopedista. U slučaju Zlatka Galla ta etiketa nije pitanje odokativne procjene i pjesničke slobode, nego doslovna činjenica jer se u njegovom zamašnom autorskom portfelju, uz zbirke rahle esejistike, nalaze i svesci stroge, precizne i sveobuhvatne leksikonske, odnosno enciklopedijske literature.

Ovome emeritusu rock kritike oduvijek sam zavidio barem koliko sam ga i sažalijevao. Divno je posvetiti cijeli život glazbi koju voliš, makar kao njezin publicistički suputnik, ako već ne kao njezin stvaralac. Međutim, taj karijerni izbor sa sobom nosi i stanovite probleme. Želiš li sačuvati profesionalnu reputaciju, produkciju moraš pratiti u cijelosti, a ne razmaženo birati o kojim ćeš izvođačima i žanrovima pisati.

Dekada koja traje

To znači da puno svoga vremena i energije moraš potrošiti na albume koji ne samo da te ne privlače, nego te možda iritiraju, ali ih, unatoč tome, ne smiješ zaobilaziti jer su objektivno važni i vrijedni. Neumoljiv prema sebi, ali i sadržaju svoga pisanja, Gall nikada nije išao linijom manjeg otpora, nego je dosljedno pratio ama baš sve što se pod egidom popularne glazbe snimalo i izvodilo (što i nadalje čini, premda je službeno u mirovini). Potom je to šarenilo (žanrova, ambicija, dosega...) dugo prosijavao kroz filtere nijansiranih kriterija, da bi onda uspostavio hijerarhiju te razlučio kome pripada čast inovatora, a kome status epigona.

Njegov zamašni (580 stranica) libar pod naslovom “Šezdesete” i podnaslovom “Kada je glazba mijenjala svijet”, akribični bedeker kroz jednu glazbenu epohu ispisan u formi abecedarija (eseji pokrivaju raspon od Allman Brothers Banda do Zombiesa, ne zanemarujući ni hrvatske začinjavce) dojmljivo je svjedočanstvo i erudicije, i metodološke strogosti, ali, prije svega, strasti. U neku ruku, knjiga se može čitati i kao svojevrsna posveta vlastitim formativnim godinama, jer je autor (rođen 1954.) na izmaku dekade već bio tinejdžer s jasno profiliranim afinitetima, ukusom, pa čak i ambicijom da se posveti pisanju o glazbi, poput svojih tadašnjih uzora iz “New Musical Express” i “Melody Makera”.

Da “Šezdesete” valja preporučiti mladima čija su znanja o toj dekadi relativno oskudna, suvišno je i napominjati. No treba li još jedan libar o slavnoj epohi onima koji su se na nju odavno navukli i u međuvremenu pročitali kubik-dva slične literature? O da, treba, itekako treba, jer će i najveći zaluđenik u šezdesete u Gallovoj inventuri otkriti preobilje podataka koji mu ranije nisu bili poznati. Činjenica što je knjiga prebogato ilustrirana fotografijama – među kojima ih ima lijep broj koje potpisnik ovih redaka nikada prije nije vidio – samo je dodatni razlog da knjigu što prije uzmete u ruke. Konačno, šezdesete su prošle samo de jure, ali ne i de facto, jer se sva glazba iz toga doba i dandanas reciklira i tako, barem posredno, oblikuje soundtrack našega vremena. •
