Čudaštvo i mračnjaštvo redatelja Davida Lyncha zatomljeno je u filmu "Straightova priča" ("The Straight Story", 1999.), snimljenom prema nevjerojatnoj istinitoj priči o sedamdeset-i-nešto-godišnjem starčiću na gotovo 500 kilometara dugom putu na kosilici s improviziranom prikolicom da vidi brata na samrti s kojim nije razgovarao deset godina. Starčić se zove Alvin Straight i film je naslovljen po njemu (kod nas poznat i kao "Prava priča").

No, naslov je dvoznačan u kontekstu Lyncha i njegova opusa. "The Straight Story" je najviše "straight" od svih Lynchovih filmova, naročito "Plavog baršuna", "Twin Peaksa", "Izgubljene ceste" i "Mulholland Drive". Linearan, lirski, optimističan, sentimentalan, lišen nadrealnih hororskih bizarnosti i košmarnosti, to je naj(ne)običniji Lynchov film, totalno drukčiji od drugih.

Netko možda ne bi ni detektirao da se Lynch nalazi iza kamere, unatoč angažmanu dežurnog skladatelja Angela Badalamentija i glumaca poput Harryja Deana Stantona i Everetta McGilla. Istina, Lynch u jednoj od prvih scena prikazuje pokošenu tratinu u dvorištu kuće kao u "Blue Velvet", ali znakovito je da kamera ne zaranja ispod zemlje gdje caruju crvi kao simbol truleži američkog društva; "americana" je ovdje predmet posvete i slave, ne kritike i strave.

Mir se uvlači u "Straightovu priču" odmah od veličanstvenog prvog kadra spokojnog zvjezdanog neba koje se pretapa u beskrajne žute oranice. "Gledanje zvijezda smiruje misli", reći će kasnije Alvin (fantastični Richard Farnsworth zasluženo nominiran za Oscara u posljednoj ulozi). Alvin je sa svojim bratom Lyleom (Stanton) volio gledati zvijezde kad su bili djeca.

"Želim sjesti s njim i gledati zvijezde kao što smo to radili", govori on i zato "mora opet na cestu, mora vidjeti Lylea" koji je pretrpio moždani udar. Kad Alvin krene na odiseju američkim srednjim Zapadom, gledatelj od Lyncha očekuje da bi na prvom raskrižju mogao odvesti film u nadrealnom smjeru i da "The Straigh Story" može postati "The Lost Highway" ili da barem starčić usput stane u gradiću poput Twin Peaksa, ali to se ne događa.

Tu i tamo Alvin sretne neke čudake i/li ekscentrike po mjeri Lynchovih filmova koje "Straightova priča" doziva i crnim humorom ("Zašto ti treba hvatač?" Za hvatanje!"), recimo ženu koja (po)šizi što je nanovo pregazila jelena i "red neck" blizance. Međutim, nitko od njih nije prijeteći nastrojen i za Alvina nikad ne strahujemo kao što bi strahovali da je u nekom drugom Lynchovom filmu poput "Izgubljene ceste" koja je jin "Straightovu" jangu.

Može se napisati da je "The Straight Story" svojevrsna "Pronađena cesta", "road movie" drama o čovjeku koji odlazi na iskupničko putovanje kako bi se suočio sa svojim grijesima umjesto da ih drži u sebi i da to rezultira košmarnim "lynchovskim" rascjepom ličnosti, što je iskusio grešni lik Billa Pullmana u "The Lost Highway".

I Alvina proganjaju košmari iz Drugog svjetskog rata, kako otkriva u bolnoj sceni razgovora sa suzama u očima s veteranom (Donald Weigert) za šankom tijekom njegovih usputnih stanica. Ovo je film ceste u kojem je putovnje jednako vžno kao odredšte i melankolična drama o žalosti i tuzi u srcu, starosti, sjećanju, prolaznosti života.

Lynch često snima Alvina kako druga vozila i ljudi prolaze pokraj njega i njegove "kuće s kotačima", automobili, kamioni, biciklisti. "Što je najstrašnije u starosti?", pita Alvina jedan mladić. "Sjećati se svoje mladosti", odgovara on, ali i "pronalazi nešto dobro u starenju".

"U mojim godinama znam sve što život donosi, naučio sam razlikovati žito od kukolja i više me ništa ne može iznenaditi", veli Alvin. Rijetko Alvin govori, no kad nešto kaže – to ima težinu. Farnsworth pretežno glumi borama i očima; u njegovom oku Lynch hvata sve ljepote Srednjeg zapada, kukuruzna polja nalik žutom moru, uspavane gradiće u zoru itd., pronalazeći poeziju i magiju filma u slikama isprepletenima s divnom Badalamentijevom glazbom.

"Kladim se da je topao krevet i krov nad glavom bolji od jedenja hrenovki sa štapića i čudaka koji se vozi okolo na kosilici", dobaci Alvi autostoperici (Anastasia Webb) dok dijele jelo. No, Lynchov film toliko je topao da bi i gledatelj rado kampirao pod otvorenim zvjezdanim nebom s Alvinom. Nebo puno zvijezda otvara i zatvara film, odvodeći "Straightovu priču" do samog kozmosa i vječnosti.

Čudaštvo i mračnjaštvo redatelja Davida Lyncha zatomljeno je u filmu "Straightova priča" ("The Straight Story", 1999.), snimljenom prema nevjerojatnoj istinitoj priči o sedamdeset-i-nešto-godišnjem starčiću na gotovo 500 kilometara dugom putu na kosilici s improviziranom prikolicom da vidi brata na samrti s kojim nije razgovarao deset godina. Starčić se zove Alvin Straight i film je naslovljen po njemu (kod nas poznat i kao "Prava priča").

No, naslov je dvoznačan u kontekstu Lyncha i njegova opusa. "The Straight Story" je najviše "straight" od svih Lynchovih filmova, naročito "Plavog baršuna", "Twin Peaksa", "Izgubljene ceste" i "Mulholland Drive". Linearan, lirski, optimističan, sentimentalan, lišen nadrealnih hororskih bizarnosti i košmarnosti, to je naj(ne)običniji Lynchov film, totalno drukčiji od drugih.

Netko možda ne bi ni detektirao da se Lynch nalazi iza kamere, unatoč angažmanu dežurnog skladatelja Angela Badalamentija i glumaca poput Harryja Deana Stantona i Everetta McGilla. Istina, Lynch u jednoj od prvih scena prikazuje pokošenu tratinu u dvorištu kuće kao u "Blue Velvet", ali znakovito je da kamera ne zaranja ispod zemlje gdje caruju crvi kao simbol truleži američkog društva; "americana" je ovdje predmet posvete i slave, ne kritike i strave.

Mir se uvlači u "Straightovu priču" odmah od veličanstvenog prvog kadra spokojnog zvjezdanog neba koje se pretapa u beskrajne žute oranice. "Gledanje zvijezda smiruje misli", reći će kasnije Alvin (fantastični Richard Farnsworth zasluženo nominiran za Oscara u posljednoj ulozi). Alvin je sa svojim bratom Lyleom (Stanton) volio gledati zvijezde kad su bili djeca.

"Želim sjesti s njim i gledati zvijezde kao što smo to radili", govori on i zato "mora opet na cestu, mora vidjeti Lylea" koji je pretrpio moždani udar. Kad Alvin krene na odiseju američkim srednjim Zapadom, gledatelj od Lyncha očekuje da bi na prvom raskrižju mogao odvesti film u nadrealnom smjeru i da "The Straigh Story" može postati "The Lost Highway" ili da barem starčić usput stane u gradiću poput Twin Peaksa, ali to se ne događa.

Tu i tamo Alvin sretne neke čudake i/li ekscentrike po mjeri Lynchovih filmova koje "Straightova priča" doziva i crnim humorom ("Zašto ti treba hvatač?" Za hvatanje!"), recimo ženu koja (po)šizi što je nanovo pregazila jelena i "red neck" blizance. Međutim, nitko od njih nije prijeteći nastrojen i za Alvina nikad ne strahujemo kao što bi strahovali da je u nekom drugom Lynchovom filmu poput "Izgubljene ceste" koja je jin "Straightovu" jangu.

Može se napisati da je "The Straight Story" svojevrsna "Pronađena cesta", "road movie" drama o čovjeku koji odlazi na iskupničko putovanje kako bi se suočio sa svojim grijesima umjesto da ih drži u sebi i da to rezultira košmarnim "lynchovskim" rascjepom ličnosti, što je iskusio grešni lik Billa Pullmana u "The Lost Highway".

I Alvina proganjaju košmari iz Drugog svjetskog rata, kako otkriva u bolnoj sceni razgovora sa suzama u očima s veteranom (Donald Weigert) za šankom tijekom njegovih usputnih stanica. Ovo je film ceste u kojem je putovnje jednako vžno kao odredšte i melankolična drama o žalosti i tuzi u srcu, starosti, sjećanju, prolaznosti života.

Lynch često snima Alvina kako druga vozila i ljudi prolaze pokraj njega i njegove "kuće s kotačima", automobili, kamioni, biciklisti. "Što je najstrašnije u starosti?", pita Alvina jedan mladić. "Sjećati se svoje mladosti", odgovara on, ali i "pronalazi nešto dobro u starenju".

"U mojim godinama znam sve što život donosi, naučio sam razlikovati žito od kukolja i više me ništa ne može iznenaditi", veli Alvin. Rijetko Alvin govori, no kad nešto kaže – to ima težinu. Farnsworth pretežno glumi borama i očima; u njegovom oku Lynch hvata sve ljepote Srednjeg zapada, kukuruzna polja nalik žutom moru, uspavane gradiće u zoru itd., pronalazeći poeziju i magiju filma u slikama isprepletenima s divnom Badalamentijevom glazbom.

"Kladim se da je topao krevet i krov nad glavom bolji od jedenja hrenovki sa štapića i čudaka koji se vozi okolo na kosilici", dobaci Alvi autostoperici (Anastasia Webb) dok dijele jelo. No, Lynchov film toliko je topao da bi i gledatelj rado kampirao pod otvorenim zvjezdanim nebom s Alvinom. Nebo puno zvijezda otvara i zatvara film, odvodeći "Straightovu priču" do samog kozmosa i vječnosti.

Međutim, nitko od njih nije prijeteći nastrojen i za Alvina nikad ne strahujemo kao što bi strahovali da je u nekom drugom Lynchovom filmu poput "Izgubljene ceste" koja je jin "Straightovu" jangu.

Može se napisati da je "The Straight Story" svojevrsna "Pronađena cesta", "road movie" drama o čovjeku koji odlazi na iskupničko putovanje kako bi se suočio sa svojim grijesima umjesto da ih drži u sebi i da to rezultira košmarnim "lynchovskim" rascjepom ličnosti, što je iskusio grešni lik Billa Pullmana u "The Lost Highway".

I Alvina proganjaju košmari iz Drugog svjetskog rata, kako otkriva u bolnoj sceni razgovora sa suzama u očima s veteranom (Donald Weigert) za šankom tijekom njegovih usputnih stanica. Ovo je film ceste u kojem je putovnje jednako vžno kao odredšte i melankolična drama o žalosti i tuzi u srcu, starosti, sjećanju, prolaznosti života.

Lynch često snima Alvina kako druga vozila i ljudi prolaze pokraj njega i njegove "kuće s kotačima", automobili, kamioni, biciklisti. "Što je najstrašnije u starosti?", pita Alvina jedan mladić. "Sjećati se svoje mladosti", odgovara on, ali i "pronalazi nešto dobro u starenju".

"U mojim godinama znam sve što život donosi, naučio sam razlikovati žito od kukolja i više me ništa ne može iznenaditi", veli Alvin. Rijetko Alvin govori, no kad nešto kaže – to ima težinu. Farnsworth pretežno glumi borama i očima; u njegovom oku Lynch hvata sve ljepote Srednjeg zapada, kukuruzna polja nalik žutom moru, uspavane gradiće u zoru itd., pronalazeći poeziju i magiju filma u slikama isprepletenima s divnom Badalamentijevom glazbom.

"Kladim se da je topao krevet i krov nad glavom bolji od jedenja hrenovki sa štapića i čudaka koji se vozi okolo na kosilici", dobaci Alvi autostoperici (Anastasia Webb) dok dijele jelo. No, Lynchov film toliko je topao da bi i gledatelj rado kampirao pod otvorenim zvjezdanim nebom s Alvinom. Nebo puno zvijezda otvara i zatvara film, odvodeći "Straightovu priču" do samog kozmosa i vječnosti.
