Splitski ljubitelji jazza ne usuđuju se ni maštati. Fantazirati o lukulovskim gozbama smiju ljudi koji se hrane redovito i obilno, a ne pothranjeni gladuši, njima su i mrvice sa stola nedostižne.

Zato mi bez pogovora i sa zahvalnošću primamo sve što nam se od prilike do prilike servira, i to u malim dozama, ne na žlicu, nego na kućarin. Ipak, povremeno, beznadno rijetko, svake prijestupne godine, i pred Splićanima se zna ukazati čudo, koncert neke vedete iz bijeloga svijeta.

Jedno od takvih ukazanja dogodit će se u nedjelju, 19. studenoga u Hrvatskom domu, gdje nam stiže ansambl The Baylor Project. U šest godina postojanja ova se glazbena formacija uspjela izboriti za šest grammyjevskih nominacija.

Okosnica benda bračni su par, vokalistica Jean i bubnjar Marcus Baylor, a u Split stižu s pijanistom Terryjem Brewerom, bubnjarem Ameenom Salleemom i saksofonistom Keithom Loftisom. I Jean i Marcus doslovce su odrasli u crkvama, jer su im oboma očevi bili pastori.

Odgojeni na gospelu, u ranoj su mladosti prigrlili rhythm & blues i soul, odakle ih je put vodio prema mnogim rukavcima jazza. Svi ti utjecaji itekako se čuju u njihovoj glazbi koja je osebujni amalgam mnogih afroameričkih idioma.

Najava ‘teškaša’

Jean je reputaciju iznimne pjevačice gradila surađujući s Grammyjevim nagrađenim bendom Yellowjackets (u kojemu je svirao njezin muž) te s Marcusom Millerom i Busterom Williamsom, dok je Marcus dijelio pozornicu s Cassandrom Willson, Kennyjem Garettom i Johnom Scofieldom.

Oni, međutim, nisu samo par iznimnih izvođača, nego i sjajni skladatelji, odnosno aranžeri.

Pokrivajući široki raspon od bluesa i gospela do swinga i be bopa, stvaraju glazbu koju kritika naziva “visokoenergetskom”, jer ju je nemoguće slušati a da nehotice ne počnete rukama i nogama slijediti zarazne ritmove. Ako postoji vrsta jazza koja je idealna za inicijaciju novih fanova – onih ljudi koji vjeruju kako sinkopirana glazba nije njihova šalica čaja – onda je to muzika The Baylor Projecta.

Njihov splitski koncert trebao bi biti, imali smo prilike čuti iz dobro obaviještenih izvora, najava skorih gostovanja još nekih “teškaša” iz ove glazbene niše. Čuda bi se, dakle, mogla početi događati učestalom dinamikom? Držimo fige!

Splitski ljubitelji jazza ne usuđuju se ni maštati. Fantazirati o lukulovskim gozbama smiju ljudi koji se hrane redovito i obilno, a ne pothranjeni gladuši, njima su i mrvice sa stola nedostižne.

Zato mi bez pogovora i sa zahvalnošću primamo sve što nam se od prilike do prilike servira, i to u malim dozama, ne na žlicu, nego na kućarin. Ipak, povremeno, beznadno rijetko, svake prijestupne godine, i pred Splićanima se zna ukazati čudo, koncert neke vedete iz bijeloga svijeta.

Jedno od takvih ukazanja dogodit će se u nedjelju, 19. studenoga u Hrvatskom domu, gdje nam stiže ansambl The Baylor Project. U šest godina postojanja ova se glazbena formacija uspjela izboriti za šest grammyjevskih nominacija.

Okosnica benda bračni su par, vokalistica Jean i bubnjar Marcus Baylor, a u Split stižu s pijanistom Terryjem Brewerom, bubnjarem Ameenom Salleemom i saksofonistom Keithom Loftisom. I Jean i Marcus doslovce su odrasli u crkvama, jer su im oboma očevi bili pastori.

Odgojeni na gospelu, u ranoj su mladosti prigrlili rhythm & blues i soul, odakle ih je put vodio prema mnogim rukavcima jazza. Svi ti utjecaji itekako se čuju u njihovoj glazbi koja je osebujni amalgam mnogih afroameričkih idioma.

Najava ‘teškaša’

Jean je reputaciju iznimne pjevačice gradila surađujući s Grammyjevim nagrađenim bendom Yellowjackets (u kojemu je svirao njezin muž) te s Marcusom Millerom i Busterom Williamsom, dok je Marcus dijelio pozornicu s Cassandrom Willson, Kennyjem Garettom i Johnom Scofieldom.

Oni, međutim, nisu samo par iznimnih izvođača, nego i sjajni skladatelji, odnosno aranžeri.

Pokrivajući široki raspon od bluesa i gospela do swinga i be bopa, stvaraju glazbu koju kritika naziva “visokoenergetskom”, jer ju je nemoguće slušati a da nehotice ne počnete rukama i nogama slijediti zarazne ritmove. Ako postoji vrsta jazza koja je idealna za inicijaciju novih fanova – onih ljudi koji vjeruju kako sinkopirana glazba nije njihova šalica čaja – onda je to muzika The Baylor Projecta.

Njihov splitski koncert trebao bi biti, imali smo prilike čuti iz dobro obaviještenih izvora, najava skorih gostovanja još nekih “teškaša” iz ove glazbene niše. Čuda bi se, dakle, mogla početi događati učestalom dinamikom? Držimo fige!
