"Prekjučer je u Hwangeu pronađeno 10 novih leševa, dvoje osumnjičenih je uhićeno i zaplijenjeno je 14 komada slonovače", kazala je Caroline Washaya-Moyo, glasnogovornica uprave nacionalnog parka.

Posljednjih je tjedana zbog trovanja slonova uhićeno 12 osoba, od kojih su tri osuđene na najmanje 15 godina zatvora uz odštetu od 600.000 dolara.

Vlasti su također stanovnicima sela koje optužuju za korištenje cijanida postavile ultimatum. Plemenski vođe mole oprost vlasti i tvrde da su seljani, ako su sudjelovali u krivolovu, to učinili zbog siromaštva, a ne zbog gramzivosti.

Nacionalni park nalazi se na 14.000 četvornih kilometara gdje patrolira oko 50-ak čuvara, a potrebno ih je deset puta više.

Broj slonova u parku se procjenjuje na 120.000. Te su životinje žrtve organizirane mreže krivolovaca koji slonovaču izvoze u Aziju i na Bliski istok, usprkos zabrani koja je na snazi od 1989.

Ilegalna trgovina slonovače godišnje dosegne vrijednost od oko 10 milijardi dolara.

"Prekjučer je u Hwangeu pronađeno 10 novih leševa, dvoje osumnjičenih je uhićeno i zaplijenjeno je 14 komada slonovače", kazala je Caroline Washaya-Moyo, glasnogovornica uprave nacionalnog parka.

Posljednjih je tjedana zbog trovanja slonova uhićeno 12 osoba, od kojih su tri osuđene na najmanje 15 godina zatvora uz odštetu od 600.000 dolara.

Vlasti su također stanovnicima sela koje optužuju za korištenje cijanida postavile ultimatum. Plemenski vođe mole oprost vlasti i tvrde da su seljani, ako su sudjelovali u krivolovu, to učinili zbog siromaštva, a ne zbog gramzivosti.

Nacionalni park nalazi se na 14.000 četvornih kilometara gdje patrolira oko 50-ak čuvara, a potrebno ih je deset puta više.

Broj slonova u parku se procjenjuje na 120.000. Te su životinje žrtve organizirane mreže krivolovaca koji slonovaču izvoze u Aziju i na Bliski istok, usprkos zabrani koja je na snazi od 1989.

Ilegalna trgovina slonovače godišnje dosegne vrijednost od oko 10 milijardi dolara.
